Sahara Surf is the first surfing company to organise surf trips through the Sahara Desert one of the richest and virgin surfing destinations on earth. Let us guide you through one thousand five hundred kilometres of ‘unsurfed’ coastline beyond flat lands and sand dunes, revealing endless Saharan secrets. Being in the Sahara is a humbling experience. Isolation, serenity, beautiful light and empty beaches make you feel like you’re in another world, one with top world class surf.

The Taghazout surf trip takes in much more than the classic point breaks of Taghazout. Rather than staying in one place we’ll be surfing spots along the five hundred kilometres of coast, anywhere between Sidi Ifni in the south to Safi in the north, heading to where the surf is best. As well as experiencing the Moroccan surf you’ll also take in the beauty of Morocco, its culture and cuisine.

  • Sahara is not an easy surf trip – expect long drives and hikes in the desert to get to surf spots.
  • Surf is totally empty, good and bad! If you see a surfer in the Sahara you feel like you wanna go have a chat. Generally you’re pretty much guaranteed to have the waves to yourself
  • There is a variety of quality waves – beach-breaks, point-breaks, reef and slabs.
  • The Sahrawians are friendly welcoming people.
  • Food in the Sahara is very cheap.
  • It’ll be blazing hot in the day and freezing cold at night.
  • Police check points before and after main cities.
  • There is no night life in the Sahara and there is only one bar where you can have alcohol.

Sahara Surf - Taghazout Adventure

Our Taghazout surf trip will take you along 500km of stunning coast between Safi 320km to the north and Sidi Ifni 150km to the south. On this trip you’ll take in more than the classic point breaks of Taghazout – not only will you stay where the best surf is for that day but you’ll also get to see and experience more of Morocco.

If the swell is massive we will not hesitate to drive up to Safi, one of the best point-breaks in the world. Please note: for the legendary Safi wave to break, over 3 meters (10 foot) west swell needed.

Near all surf spots there are restaurants and beach cafes to choose from serving a variety of local and international cuisine. You’ll also have the opportunity to eat local specialties – taste the best tagines and the freshest fish barbeque.

Sahara Surf - Cape Juby Adventure

If you are time or budget restricted but still want to experience the Sahara then the Cap Juby trip is for you. On this trip you’ll get a taste for the Sahara as we take in at least 600km of coast south of Agadir, scoring waves at secret spots along the way as the landscape changes and Saharan desert dunes appear.

Starting out from Taghazout, we’ll go through Sidi Ifni and Tan Tan and check out the town of Tarfaya, sandwiched between the sand dunes and the sea.  Here surrounded by waves on all sides there’s a castle in the ocean – Casa Del Mar – as well as some great waves north and south of Tarfaya.

As with all our trips we’ll be taking in some places of stunning natural beauty,  surf the best waves Cape Juby coastline will offer for that day,  stay in selected local accommodations and you’ll taste the best camel meat barbecues and Tagines so that you get to experience the real Morocco.

Sahara Surf - Dakhla Adventure

With a massive 1500km of spectacular coastline there are countless surf spots and epic waves to make your journey into the Sahara an unforgettable lifetime surf experience. Exploring where the Sahara desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, we’ll be off roading, hiking dunes of sand, discovering deserted spots and surfing the best waves, which you’ll have to yourself. This is the Sahara.

To get the most from this trip really one week is not enough – you’ll need at least ten days if not two weeks. We’ll start out from Agadir until at least Dakhla, if the surf conditions are good we’ll go deeper into the Sahara, as far as the border between Morocco and Mauritania to seek out the best breaks and barrels. The final details of the Sahara Surf trip will depend on the surf charts and will be planned in our office before we leave.

In the Sahara eating options can sometimes be limited, lunch and dinner arrangements will depend on our location. Camel kebabs are a typical Saharan food, delicious and healthy and there’s plenty of fresh fish perfect for a post-surf beach barbeque. Along the way we can stop at local restaurants for traditional Moroccan tagines and salads.

Location & surf

Situated on the north-west coast of Africa, Morocco is exposed to the frontal lows coming off North America, pumping out solid north and north-west ground swell that charges the Moroccan coastline. While the winter storms in the northern hemisphere give Europe rain, cold temperatures and strong on-shore flow, in Morocco the sun shines and the surf is going off.

There is surf in Morocco all year round but for those seeking heavy barrels or long carvable peelers the main surf season starts from October to March.

Spiders (Distance: 1115m)

Spiders' remain one of the most underground wave in the taghazout area due to its intensity and fastness when it is working. It is a thickle wave like the west swell and the big periods. When it works, you can get big tubes there if you are into that ability level! if you can surf that wave you won't have any problem going in and out. Good luck

Anker point (Distance: 6194m)

Anker point is Morocco's famous point break. Long right hander, needs a bit of clean swell to work and when it is going off, it's an amazing wave. The way in can be tricky as you have to jump of rocks! The way out is pretty easy, there is a little beach in the inside of the point!

It does get too crowded in Morocco's main surf season! Sahara Surf. Good luck..
